Abstract

This article analyzes the performance of simple grounding electrodes made up of one, two and three metal rods, since this type of simple electrodes is usually built in residential electrical installations without electrical studies and on an anti-technical way. ETAP is used with its FEM finite element method grounding module and determines how these electrodes behave in terms of the touch and step voltages. Single and double-rod electrodes are found to be ineffective and dangerous because they develop very high touch and step voltages. The three-rod electrode may be suitable if some criteria described at the end of the article are applied.
